Giovanni dalle Bande Nere: un libro - The Black Bands of Giovanni

In questi giorni di pandemia, chiusi a casa, non ci resta che navigare nella rete alla ricerca di qualcosa che possa esaudire la nostra sete di conoscenza.

Volendo dipingere qualche miniatura particolare ho pensato ai reparti del famoso Giovanni de'Medici, le Bande Nere, cosiddette perchè portavano i vessilli abbrunati per la morte del papa Leone X.

Parte delle vicende che lo coinvolsero è narrata nel bellissimo film "Il Mestiere delle Armi" di Ermanno Olmi.

Non è che in giro si trovi moltissimo sulle sue unità e sulla sua storia militare con un dettaglio che interessi il wargamer.
Frugando in giro ho trovato il volume "The Black Bands of Giovanni - Infantry and Diplomacy during the Italian Wars (1526-1528)" - pubblicato nel 2005, di Maurizio Arfaioli che si può scaricare in pdf gratuitamente a questo indirizzo.

In realtà il volume copre per la maggior parte il periodo della Lega di Cognac successivo alla morte di Giovanni, con particolare interesse per l'assedio di Napoli e le attività di guerra in mare (che, guardacaso, abbiamo appena visto nei post precedenti), ma ha un gran numero di tabelle con gli organici delle bande e degli eserciti.
Ad una prima occhiata appare assai interessante... vi saprò dire appena l'avrò letto..

In these pandemic days, closed at home, we just have to surf the net looking for something that can 

satisfy our thirst for knowledge. 

Wanting to paint some particular miniatures, I thought of the units of the famous Giovanni de 'Medici,

 the Bande Nere, so-called because they wore dark banners for the death of Pope Leo X.

There is not a great deal about his units and his military history with a detail that interests the 

wargamer but, looking around, I found the volume "The Black Bands of Giovanni - Infantry and 

Diplomacy during the Italian Wars (1526-1528)" - published in 2005, by Maurizio Arfaioli 

which can be downloaded in pdf for free at this address (in English).
The volume mostly covers the period of the Cognac League following Giovanni's death, with

 particular interest in the siege of Naples and the war activities at sea (which, as a matter of fact, 

we have just seen here in previous posts),and it contains a number of tables with the OOBs of 

the bands and armies.

At first glance it looks very interesting ... I will be able to tell you as soon as I read it ..

Un nuovo progetto! A new project!

Il Castello di Ferrara

Dopo aver affrontato , anche qui in rete con altri blog, progetti più "esotici", come la Grande Guerra del Nord o la Campagna Napoleonica di Russia, voglio spostarmi più indietro nel tempo ma avvicinarmi nello spazio. Due recenti gite, ad Urbino ed a Ferrara, mi hanno stuzzicato la voglia di riprendere un progetto che avevo iniziato qualche anno fa e poi lasciato a mezza strada, tra l'altro in una scala diversa. Gli eventi bellici che hanno coinvolto l'intera penisola italiana tra la fine del XV e l'inizio del XVI secolo e note come "Guerre d'Italia".
Francia, Spagna, Imperiali, Svizzeri, Lanzichenecchi, e gli Stati Italiani, da quello Pontificio alla Repubblica Veneziana, dagli Sforza ai Gonzaga, agli Estensi, e così via, impegnati a scannarsi per quasi cent'anni, cambiando alleanze e partito più e più volte. Cavallerie pesanti, picchieri, le prime artiglierie, archibugieri, balestrieri, spadaccini, alabardieri, cavallerie leggere balcaniche... insomma non c'è che l'imbarazzo della scelta tra truppe coloratissime, forse le più colorate della storia. Scudi, palvesi, bandiere... la gioia del modellista oltre che quella del wargamer!

L'altra volta avevo iniziato con i 15 mm, ma la recente uscita sul mercato degli economici pezzi in plastica in 28 mm della Perry Miniatures (bellissimi) (oltre ad un calo della vista legato all'età incipiente) mi ha fatto decidere per la scala più grande. E così, via, un nuovo progetto... e tutto partendo da zero...



 Having dealt with, even here in a network with other blogs, projects more "exotic", such as the Great Northern War or the Napoleonic Campaign in Russia, I want to move further back in time but closer in space. Two recent trips, to Urbino and Ferrara, I have whetted the desire to resume a project that I started a few years ago and then left halfway through, among other things in a different scale. The wars that involved the entire Italian peninsula between the late fifteenth and early sixteenth century and known as the "Italian Wars".

Heavy cavalry, pikemen, the first artillery, musketeers, archers, swordsmen, halberdiers, light cavalry  from Balkan ... in short, there is plenty of choice of colored troops, perhaps the most colorful history. Shields, palvesi, flags ... the joy of modeller as well as that of the wargamer!

The other time I started with the 15 mm, but the recent release on the market of cheap plastic parts in 28 mm of Perry Miniatures (so beautiful) (in addition to an incipient decline in age-related vision ) made ​​me decide to larger scale. And so on, a new project ... and everything from scratch ...
