- Choosing the rule set , part 2 - We have made our choice!

 ****
Carrying on the analysis of the rules for this period, we finally found what seems to do the best choice, for us: it is widely based on the game mechanics of Field of Battle (a a rule ste which, in turn, is derived from the system Piquet) and is currently being playtested by the author, James Roach, who has already published in some magazines three other regulations with the same game system, Ager proelii, about the Punic Wars, Ager sanguinis, about the crusades, and Fleet of Battle , on the naval battles of antiquity (all regulations are available for free on the net).

Hell Broke Loose  is a rule set compiled specifically for the Italian Wars, and it is a so-called card-driven, ie the sequence in which the move is dictated by the random sequence of two decks of cards, one per player: this is a very widespread system in the world of Boardgames and  only in recent times time it is spreading in the rules of three-dimensional (among others, the recent Musket & Tomahawk, a skirmish for War French - Indian Wars), which ensures a strong dose of unpredictability of the events, but which, if properly calibrated, guarantees a lot of fun while maintaining good "historic" reliability to the represented events.

The units are generally represented by four bases each, with the exception of Spanish Colunellas, on 6 or 8 bases, and the squares of pikes, ranging from 6 to .... 18 (!) with a
really spectacular effect  ... The number of figures for base  is irrelevant, but the author, for aesthetic purposes, suggests 6 figures as a basis for the pikemen, 3 for skirmishers, 2 for cavalry and 4 for all others.
from the Author's website, Olicanald's Games
The rule set is in advanced stages of playtesting, but the author has already presented it at a number of important conventions: we tried it last Friday, with excellent results that have convinced even the most skeptical about the card driven system  players in the club ... For more information, give a look at the author's website, which by the way is full of beautiful pictures of his pieces.

When I start with a new period, usually one of the first things I do is identify the rule set that I will use. This is to figure out how many miniatures I need and how they should be based . So I begin to examine and evaluate its complexity, playability, fun, originality and, above all, if it will please my fellow battle (I know their tastes well enough to know that if they does not like a rules set , then ends to hold the pieces in the closet).

With regard to the Renaissance period, in spite of several regulations that have been published, so far we have not found anyone that makes us really crazy.

I state that I prefer the rules that relate to a period of rather narrow
time, because they are often designed with ideas that make the best "warfare" of the era. So now I would avoid talking about the Phil Baker's rules, DBA and DBM, covering a two thousand years (at least) history (and I do not like them for many other reasons: have you ever seen an army of the late Renaissance without pikemen?)

For the same reason I have to discard IMPETUS, a lovely Italian rule set, that did not was very appreciated in Rome (especially in my club, alas, despite the efforts made in the past).

Field of Glory (FOG): I have not yet tried the  Renaissance version. However, the version for the antiquity does not convince me. Too tournament rule, too mechanistic, a bit humdrum. And especially good for games between two players (in my honest opinion).

I have not tried this: however, this rule set  is an expansion of Black Powder of the Warlords that I know quite well. If it's like the "father", is a nice game system, with some nice invention (such as the control system), but in short, it is perhaps not very historic, for my taste ...

This, for the Renaissance, is, IMHO, the best of the series POW (Principles of War). A rule set quite innovative, though it has a few years now. The weak side is the basing system that is rather inconsistent with other regulations, and the army lists, which for this period are rather "imaginative".

A rule set that now has a few years but that once was really fun.
Perfect in its game mechanics, it feels a little the weight of years, and, for people that are hungry for new game systems it appears quite outdated.

A new project!

Having dealt with, even here in a network with other blogs, projects more "exotic", such as the Great Northern War or the Napoleonic Campaign in Russia, I want to move further back in time but closer in space. Two recent trips, to Urbino and Ferrara, I have whetted the desire to resume a project that I started a few years ago and then left halfway through, among other things in a different scale. The wars that involved the entire Italian peninsula between the late fifteenth and early sixteenth century and known as the "Italian Wars".

France, Spain, Imperial, Swiss, Landsknecht, and the Italians states, from the Papal States to the Republic of Venice, the Sforza to Gonzaga, the Este, and so on, committed to each other's throats for almost a hundred years, changing alliances and party more and more times. Heavy cavalry, pikemen, the first artillery, musketeers, archers, swordsmen, halberdiers, light
cavalry  from Balkan ... in short, there is plenty of choice of colored troops, perhaps the most colorful history. Shields, palvesi, flags ... the joy of modeller as well as that of the wargamer!

The other time I started with the 15 mm, but the recent release on the market of cheap plastic parts in 28 mm of Perry Miniatures (so beautiful) (in addition to an
incipient decline in age-related vision ) made me decide to larger scale. And so on, a new project ... and everything from scratch ...
