I cannoni di Alfonso - Alfonso's Guns

Una delle figure più interessanti del periodo è Alfonso d'Este, signore di Ferrara, figlio di Ercole e famoso per la sua passione per le artiglierie. E' addirittura rappresentato nel film di Ermanno Olmi Il Mestiere delle armi.

One of the most interesting figures of the period is Alfonso d'Este, lord of Ferrara, the son of Hercules and famous for his passion for the artillery. And  he is represented in the  Ermanno Olmi's movie The profession of arms.

E, dunque, data la mia fresca passione per la città di Ferrara, ho pensato che i primi  artiglieri che ho dipinto per questo progetto non potevano portare altro che le insegne della famiglia d'Este.

And, then, given my fresh passion for the city of Ferrara, I thought that the first artillery that I painted for this project should carry the insignia of the Este family.

 I pezzi sono Perry in metallo: la testa del comandante è stata sostituita perchè quella originale portava un cappello di foggia troppo inglese.

Miniatures are Perry in metal: the head of the commander was replaced because the original one was wearing a hat wich  shape was too English.

 Questi due artiglieri indossano sopravvesti con l'araldica della famiglia d'Este.

 

L'originale ed il modello

Per movimentare un pò la scenetta ho aggiunto un gatto, e, visto che a casa ne ho tre, ne ho usato uno come modello. In fondo, quando ero nell'esercito, anch'io ero un artigliere e, quindi, il cerchio si chiude...

  I added a cat to spice a little the base and since I have three of them  at home, I used one as a model. After all, when I was in the army, I was a gunner, and thus the circle is closed ...

Addio a Don Featherstone - The last hallo to Don Featherstone

Don Featherstone, classe 1918, si è spento stanotte nella sua casa a Southampton , in Inghilterra.
Autore di circa 75 libri, è stato veramente uno dei padri fondatori del moderno wargame.
Basti pensare che è stato uno dei promotori della prima convention di wargame tenutasi in Inghilterra nel 1961.

Personalmente conservo ancora almeno un paio dei suoi volumi, pubblicati negli anni '70, che andavano dall'antico al contemporaneo, ed erano tra le pochissime cose che in quel periodo riuscivano ad arrivare, in qualche modo, nel nostro Paese.

Lo ricordiamo qui con la copertina del suo volume sul wargame nelle guerre rinascimentali e con una video intervista.

Addio Don e grazie per tutto quello che hai fatto per il nostro hobby.

Don Featherstone, born in 1918, has passed last night at his home in Southampton, England.

Author of some 75 books, was truly one of the founding fathers of modern wargaming.

Suffice it to say that was one of the promoters of the first wargames convention held in England in 1961.

Personally, I still have at least a couple of two books published in the '70s, ranging from ancient to contemporary, and they were among the few things that at that time we were some way able to get in Italy.

We remember him here with the cover of his book on wargame in the Pike and Shoot age and a video interview.

So long, Don and thank you for everything you have done for our hobby.

Arrivano i Lanzi in plastica!! - Plastic Landsknecht are coming!!

Riporto questa bella notizia tratta dal blog "Wargame news and terrain". La scatola dovrebbe uscire attorno a Natale e, dato l'enorme numero di Lanzi necessari, questo permetterà un ulteriore abbattimento dei costi.

La Pro Gloria è una ditta abbastanza recente che ha un range veramente magnifico di lanzi e di civili del periodo Rinascimentale (un pò tedeschi, forse).
In un post successivo, lo scultore informa che, a causa di motivi personali legati ad un parto difficoltoso da parte della moglie (!), l'uscita subirà un ritardo (lieve, speriamo).

Pro Gloria Miniatures: Upcoming Plastic Landsknechts

Pro Gloria Miniatures: Here is another preview of our cover art - it's an A3 picture but scanned two times with an A4 scanner so please forgive me the scanner line in the middle of the picture. Peter Dennis is almost finished with the picture and yes, for everyone who guessed it will be the cover of our plastic Landsknecht box - you are right! I can't give many details of the box but just some now:

- sculpting work will be done by the talented sculptor Paul Hicks

- tooling company will be Renedra Ltd in the UK

- no release date yet, but we aim to release them around Christmas

- the box will be a kickstarter with many kickstarter-only models, and many other special miniatures

- out of the box you can build 24 Landsknechte, either useable as German, Swiss, Italian or French.

La scelta del regolamento - 2 - Abbiamo fatto la nostra scelta! - Choosing the rule set , part 2 - We have made ​​our choice!

Continuando l'analisi dei regolamenti sul periodo, abbiamo finalmente individuato quello che pare fare al caso nostro: è ampiamente basato sulle meccaniche di gioco di Field of Battle (un regolamento che, a sua volta, deriva dal sistema Piquet) ed è attualmente in fase di playtesting da parte dell'autore , James Roach, che ha già pubblicato su alcune riviste del settore altri tre regolamenti con lo stesso sistema di gioco, Ager proelii, sulle guerre puniche, Ager sanguinis, sulle crociate, e Fleet of Battle, sulle battaglie navali dell'antichità (tutti i regolamenti sono disponibili gratuitamente in rete).  

 Hell Broke Loose (intraducibile in Italiano) è un regolamento compilato apposta per le Guerre d'Italia (e dintorni), ed è un cosiddetto card driven, nel quale cioè la sequenza di mossa viene dettata dalla sequenza casuale di due mazzi di carte, uno per giocatore: questo è un sistema assai diffuso nel mondo dei Boardgames che solo da qualche tempo si sta diffondendo anche nei regolamenti di tridimensionale (tra gli altri, il recente Musket & Tomahawk, uno skirmish sulla Guerra Franco Indiana), che assicura una forte dose di imprevedibilità agli eventi, ma che, se giustamente tarato, garantisce un sacco di divertimento pur conservando una buona affidabilità "storica" agli avvenimenti rappresentati.
Le unità sono generalmente rappresentate da 4 basette ciascuna, con l'eccezione delle Colunelle spagnole, su 6 o 8 basi, e dei quadrati di picche, che vanno da 6 a ....  18 (!!!) con un effetto scenico veramente grandioso... Il numero di figure per base è ininfluente ma l'autore, per fini estetici, consiglia 6 figure a  base per i picchieri, 3  per gli schermagliatori, 2 per le cavallerie e 4 per tutti gli altri.

Il regolamento è in avanzata fase di collaudo, ma l'autore l'ha già presentato a numerose importanti conventions:  noi l'abbiamo provato lo scorso venerdi, con eccellenti risultati che hanno convinto anche i più scettici sul sistema driven card tra i giocatori del club...  per ulteriori informazioni, consultate il sito dell'autore che, tra l'altro è pieno di immagini magnifiche dei suoi pezzi.

 Carrying on the analysis of the rules for this period, we finally found what seems to do the best choice, for us: it is widely based on the game mechanics of Field of Battle (a a rule ste which, in turn, is derived from the system Piquet) and is currently being playtested by the author, James Roach, who has already published in some magazines three other regulations with the same game system, Ager proelii, about the Punic Wars, Ager sanguinis, about the crusades, and Fleet of Battle , on the naval battles of antiquity (all regulations are available for free on the net).

  Hell Broke Loose  is a rule set compiled specifically for the Italian Wars, and it is a so-called card-driven, ie the sequence in which the move is dictated by the random sequence of two decks of cards, one per player: this is a very widespread system in the world of Boardgames and  only in recent times time it is spreading in the rules of three-dimensional (among others, the recent Musket & Tomahawk, a skirmish for War French - Indian Wars), which ensures a strong dose of unpredictability of the events, but which, if properly calibrated, guarantees a lot of fun while maintaining good "historic" reliability to the represented events.

The units are generally represented by four bases each, with the exception of Spanish Colunellas, on 6 or 8 bases, and the squares of pikes, ranging from 6 to .... 18 (!) with a really spectacular effect  ... The number of figures for base  is irrelevant, but the author, for aesthetic purposes, suggests 6 figures as a basis for the pikemen, 3 for skirmishers, 2 for cavalry and 4 for all others.

 The rule set is in advanced stages of playtesting, but the author has already presented it at a number of important conventions: we tried it last Friday, with excellent results that have convinced even the most skeptical about the card driven system  players in the club ... Ho trovato oggi la notizia della recentissima pubblicazione di questo volume sui Lanzi:

della casa soldiershop.com che presenta altri interessantissimi titoli (nonchè una collezione di soldatini in 54 mm di tutto rispetto...).

 Il testo è in italiano ed in inglese, le immagini sono molto belle ed il prezzo abbastanza accessibile.

I nostri migliori auguri a questa casa editrice, certamente non la prima in Italia ma sicuramente una delle più interessanti.

Today, I have found the news about the recent publication of this volume on Landsknechts from the soldiershop.com publisher: their catalogue includes other interesting titles (as well as a collection of respectable 54 mm collectors soldiers).
