Salvate Roma! (1527) - Save Rome!

Scenario di fantasia, ma possibile.
un armata formata da mercenari al soldo dell'Imperatore invade l'Italia del nord, con l'intento di liberare le truppe assediate a Milano dall'esercito dei collegati Italo-francesi (in realtà solo italiani) uniti nella Lega di Cognac.
Ma, ad un certo punto, privi di soldo e viveri decidono di puntare più a sud, per saccheggiare Firenze o Roma. I comandi sono incerti e abbastanza in balia della truppa che decide di puntare su Roma, anche perchè il papa ha combinato un sacco di pasticci diplomatici e  gli alleati cominciano a guardarlo con sospetto. Tuttavia il Papa è un Medici e Firenze riesce a convincere gli alleati a tentare un'azione di soccorso e fermare i mercenari prima che arrivino a Roma.

In questo contesto, assolutamente storico, si inserisce lo scenario che abbiamo giocato, dove, con qualche libertà abbiamo mantenuto attivo il von Frundsberg, mitico "padre" dei lanzichenecchi e, sull'altro fronte, Giovanni dalle bande nere, che in realtà era morto poco tempo prima. Anche gli army list sono immaginari, ma rispecchiano quello che probabilmente erano le composizioni e le modalità di combattimento delle due armate, con i collegati italiani più forti al tiro e con più cavallerie, mentre i mercenari erano essenzialmente truppe a piedi da mischia.

Siamo riusciti, in una sola giornata a giocare ben due volte lo scontro con i giocatori a parti invertite.

Lo scenario si è dimostrato ben bilanciato, dato che una volta hanno vinto i Mercenari e l'altra gli Italiani (seppur di misura).

La battaglia degli svizzeri si scontra con i picchieri spagnoli. La lotta sarà breve ma molto cruenta. Gli spagnoli vengono respinti ma gli svizzeri pagano l'assalto a caro prezzo e poi le spingarde dei Lanzi li metteranno in rotta.

Fictional but realistic scenario. A mercenary army  in the pay of Emperor invades northern Italy, with the intention of freeing the besieged troops in Milan by the army of the connected Italo - French (actually only Italian ) joined the League of Cognac.
But ,for some reasons, with no money and food they decide to focus further south to sack Florence or Rome . The commanders are quite uncertain and at the mercy of the troops who decided to focus on Rome , partly because the Pope has combined a lot of diplomatic trouble and allies begin to look at him with suspicion . However, the Pope is a Medici and Florence can convince the Allies to try a relief action and to stop the mercenaries before they arrive in Rome .

In this context , absolutely historical,  we played the scenario, where , with some freedom, we have maintained active von Frundsberg , the legendary " father " of mercenaries , and , on the other front , Giovanni by black bands , which, actually,  recently dead . Even the army lists are fictitious , but reflect what probably were the compositions and methods of combat of the two armies , with the Italian allies with more shooters  and e cavalry , while the mercenaries were essentially melee troops .  We succeded in playing thge scenario twice in a long sunday : in the first game Mercenaries won quite easily, but in the second game the Italian succeeded in destroy the opposite Italian wing and to give an hard lesson to the landsknechts (even if they have lost their Swiss mercenaries..). 

Note on the battlefield: the fields were rough terrain, the river and the hedges were obstacles. The farm was impassable. First move is for the italian, as the imperials are still sleeping, each one in a separate camp.

I Ginetti e i giocatori di carte - The Jinetes and the card players

Bè, non si può avere un esercito spagnolo rinascimentale senza schierare almeno alcune unità di Jinetes (o Ginetti), le cavallerie leggere addestrate nelle guerre contro i Mori, armate con giavellotti o lance leggere e scudi di foggia moresca. Ho cercato di dargli un aspetto più moresco che europeo, sia con i colori delle bardature dei cavalli che con quelli degli scudi. Ho utilizzato le miniature Perry aggiungendo scudi - credo della Foundry- trovati ad un bring & buy qualche tempo fa.

Well , you can not have a Spanish Renaissance army without deploying at least some units of Jinetes (or Genitors) , light cavalry trained in the wars against the Moors , armed with javelins and spears and light shields in Moorish fashion. I tried to give them a Moorish look more that European, both with the colors of the trappings of the horses and with those of the shields . I used the Perry miniatures adding shields - probably from Foundry- found to a bring & buy some time ago.

Inoltre, come divertissement, ho dipinto questa scenetta di tre lanzi che giocano a carte (pezzi della Redoubt Enterprises). Andranno a popolare gli accampamenti che sto preparando e dei quali si intravede una tenda...

Un esercito non esisterebbe senza i trasporti che gli assicurano vitto e riparo per la notte. Dunque, anche per i miei eserciti in piombo ho preparato un pò di trasporti.

Il carro trainato dai buoi è della Perry: pur essendo molto bello devo avvisarvi che è piuttosto complicato da assemblare e dipingere. In pratica bisogna dipingere tutti i pezzi prima di montarli, altimenti, dopo,  diventa impossibile.

I muli con i conducenti sono della ditta romana Strategia Nuova.

 In realtà sono venduti come medievali, ma penso che le differenze siano tollerabili.

Gli uomini in marcia sono della Redoubt Enterprise.

Therefore, even for my armies in lead I made some transport.

The ox cart is from the Perry minis: although very nice I must warn you that it is quite complicated to assemble and paint . In practice you have to paint all the pieces before assempling them ; otherwise , later, becomes impossible .

The mules with drivers are the Roman company Strategia Nuova.  Actually they are sold as medieval , but I think the differences are tolerable .

Un giorno allo Stibbert - A day at the Stibbert Museum

Finalmente, ieri sono riuscito a fare una cosa che desideravo da tanto tempo. Ho approfittato di una giornata a Firenze per visitare il Museo Stibbert, una delle collezioni d'armi (e di tanto altro) più grandi in Italia e, probabilmente, al mondo.

Situato su una collina  ed immerso in un grande e magnifico parco, il museo è custodito all'interno della casa che la famiglia Stibbert fece ampliare e ricostruire alla metà dell'800 in stile neogotico.
Già l'edificio è impressionante, sia all'interno che all'esterno, ma la collezione d'armi che vi è ospitata lascia assolutamente senza fiato!!! Oltre a cimeli di vari periodi (anche napoleonici: ci sono, tra gli altri, il manto che Napoleone indossava durante la sua incoronazione a Re d'Italia ed una sciabola di Gioacchino Murat) le collezioni del periodo rinascimentale sono meravigliose. La sala detta "della cavalcata" non ha nulla da invidiare all'analoga sala al Metropolitan Museum di New York, anzi forse è anche più bella, sicuramente più suggestiva. Armi ed armature delle Guerre d'Italia sono indossate da manichini e custodite in enormi teche.

 Anche la collezione "orientale" di armi ottomane ed indiane del periodo Moghul è fantastica (anche se adesso la sala principale è chiusa per restauro).

Il personale è preparatissimo a tutte le domanda gli facciate durante la visita guidata che dura circa un ora e venti.
Persino il bookshop è ben fornito con libri e souvenirs. Insomma, un Museo che meriterebbe più gloria (e finanziamenti) e che molti paesi esteri ci invidierebbe.
L'unico rimpianto è stato di non poter visitare la collezione giapponese, la più grande collezione di armature e spade da samurai che si trovi al di fuori del Giappone. C'è bisogno di prenotazione e solo in orari prestabiliti: ma tornerò a vederla, non posso mancarla...


Finally, yesterday I managed to do something that I wanted for so long. I took advantage of a day in Florence to visit the Stibbert Museum, one of the largest collection of arms (and much more), in the Italy and probably the world.

Set on a hill and surrounded by a large and beautiful park, the museum is housed inside the house that the Stibbert family had it enlarged and rebuild the middle of 800 in neo-Gothic style.
Already the building is impressive, both inside and outside, but the collection of weapons leaves absolutely breathless !!! As well as memorabilia from various periods (even Napoleonic: there are, among others, the mantle that Napoleon wore during his coronation as King of Italy and one among Joachim Murat’s saber) the collections of the Renaissance period is wonderful. The room called "the ride" has nothing to envy to the similar room at the Metropolitan Museum in New York, or perhaps it is more beautiful, certainly more impressive. Weapons and armor of the Italian Wars are worn by mannequins and stored in huge glass cases.
Even the "Oriental" collection of Ottoman and Indian weapons of the Mughal period is fantastic (even if the main hall is now closed for renovation).

The staff is well-trained in all the question during a guided tour that lasts about an hour and twenty.

Even the bookshop is well stocked with books and souvenirs. In short, a museum that deserves more glory (and funding) and that many foreign countries envy us.

The only regret was that I could not visit the Japanese collection, the largest collection of samurai armor and swords outside of Japan. One need to book the visit and only at fixed times: but I will return to see it, I can not miss it ...
