Come forse qualcuno di voi saprà, quasi un anno fa (è già passato un anno) improvvisamente ci ha lasciato troppo troppo presto Alessandro Canali, un grande amico, e wargamer senza uguali. Gli amici del club Miles Gloriosus hanno acquisito quasi tutta la sua sterminata collezione di pezzi in diverse scale, dipinti e non, anche per evitare che andasse dispersa.
Alessandro era un grandissimo pittore di miniature e vinse anche qualche contest con pezzi particolarmente meravigliori come i suoi irragiungibili russi napoleonici in 28 mm. Però aveva talmente tante miniature che, per forza di cose, in qualche caso rimaneva indietro o decideva di dipingere con tecniche più speditive. Parte del suo patrimonio era appunto formato da miniature parzialmente dipinte e lasciate lì in attesa di trovare tempo o ispirazione, o per lasciare spazio a progetti che al momento sembravano più interessanti.
Tra i pezzi di questo tipo che ho acquistato io c'erano una sessasantina di svizzeri delle guerre d'Italia in 28 mm.: i pezzi erano colorati in maniera abbozzata, addirittura non avevano montata la picca, però si vedeva già la mano di Ale. Se avesse avuto il tempo ne avrebe fatto probabilmente dei capolavori ma purtroppo non lo sapremo mai.
Allora ho deciso di conservare in qualche modo lo stile di Ale, pensando che forse avrebbe usato quelle tecniche, ed ho conservato in molti casi le scelte di abbinamento dei colori che aveva fatto lui. Almeno in alcune figure, in particolare quelle in bianco e rosso, i colori sono quelli che aveva verniciato lui, con appena qualche ritocco a parti incompiute o rovinate.
Il risultato è una via di mezzo tra come li avrebbe fatti lui e come li ho fatti io: restano un tangibile ricordo di un amico, una continuità che neanche la morte può arrestare. Ogni volta che li schiereremo sul tavolo sarà come se lui fosse ancora lì con noi.
E loro resteranno, per sempre, gli svizzeri di Alessandro.
As some of you may know, almost a year ago (a year has already passed) suddenly Alessandro Canali, a great friend, and a wargamer without equal, left us too soon. Friends of the Miles Gloriosus club have acquired almost all of his vast collection of pieces in different scales, painted and otherwise.
Alessandro was a great painter of miniatures and also won some contests with particularly marvelous pieces such as his unreachable Napoleonic Russians in 28 mm. But he had so many miniatures that, inevitably, in some cases he was left behind or decided to paint with more fast techniques. Part of its heritage was in fact made up of miniatures which were only partially painted and left there waiting to find time or inspiration, or to make room for projects that seemed to be more interesting.
Among the pieces of this type that I bought there were about sixty Swiss from the Italian wars in 28 mm: the pieces were colored in a sketchy way, even they had not mounted the pike, but you could already see Ale's hand in them. If he had had the time, he would have probably made masterpieces of them but unfortunately we will never know.
So I decided to somehow keep Ale's style, thinking that maybe he would have used those techniques, and I have kept in many cases the color matching choices he had made. At least in some figures, in particular those in white and red, the colors are those he had painted, with just a few retouching of unfinished or damaged parts.
The result is a cross between how he would have made them and how I made them: they remain a tangible memory of a friend, a continuity that not even death can stop. Every time we place them on the table it will be as if he is still there with us.
And they will remain, forever, Alessandro's Swiss.
